SEJARAH

A. Brief history

The Bachelor of Education in Mechanical Engineering study program (BEME) is one of the departments in the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Negeri Padang, and is under the management of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Currently, BEME has 33 teaching staffs/researchers and 8 administrative staffs. To support all educational activities, BEME is equipped with 8 laboratories and workshops with complete equipments that are used for learning activities, research, student final project and community service activities. Currently, BEME is accredited with predicate ‘A’ from the Indonesian higher education accreditation council (BAN-PT).

In the semester of July-December 2020, there are 475 students actively studying at BEME, 5013 students at the Faculty of Engineering (see here), and more than 45.000 students at UNP

LAB

A. Laboratories and equipment

BEME has 8 laboratories and workshops which are equipped with adequate equipment. The eight laboratories and workshops are used for teaching and learning, research and student final assignments: Machinery Workshop, Fabrication workshop, CNC-CAD-CAM laboratory, Lab. Design engineering, lab. Materials and metrology, lab. Machines’ basic phenomenon. Some of the equipment owned by all laboratories at BEME are: CNC, lathes, scrap machines, milling machines, 3D printing, computers, tensile test equipment, etc.

Laboratories and workshops at BEME can be explained as follows:

1. Machining Laboratory

The Workshop of machining is led by one Workshop Head and one Technician. The Machining workshops are used for practical activities in teaching and learning process. The knowledge and skills taught in this workshop are customized to the needs of the industry. Some of practical assignments carried out by the students at this workshop including making Chuck keys, Vise, T Slot Bolts, various type of gears, etc. The equipment in Machining Workshop can be seen here.

2. Fabrication Laboratory

The Fabrication Workshop is led by a workshop head and one technician. In Fabrication Workshop, the students are taught the practical skill in sheet metal forming, many types of joining process of the sheet metal, especially the welding process. In this workshop, the students produce various products such as cabinets, tables, window and door trellises, fences etc. The equipments in Fabrication Workshop can be seen here.

3. CNC Laboratory

This laboratory is used to make products such as nuts, bolts, etc. In this laboratory, the learning process uses a computerized system and the students are required to be able in writing a code for making a component (CAM). Then the code is executed to make a product. The equipments in this laboratory is listed here.

4. Laboratory of Engineering Design

Design Engineering Laboratory is used for engineering design process. This laboratory has many computers to support the teaching/learning process. In addition, several drawing tables are also provided to assist students in mechanical drawing manually. The equipments in Design Engineering Laboratory is shown here.

5. Laboratory of Metallurgy and Metrology

The Materials and Metrology Laboratory is used to carry out a materials testing and to measure a product to check whether they comply with the predetermined specifications and tolerances. This laboratory is used by students and lecturers in learning process, student’s final project and research. The equipments in this laboratory is listed here.

6. Laboratory of Machine Construction

The Construction Laboratory is used to carry out several testings related with mechanical phenomenons in construction. This laboratory is used by students and lecturers in learning process, students’s final project and research. The equipments in this laboratory is shown here.

7. Laboratory of Mechanical Energy Conversion

The Energy Conversion Laboratory is used to carry out a testing related with energy such as heat treatment and renewable energy. This laboratory is used by students and lecturers in learning process, student’s final project and research. The equipments in this laboratory can be seen here.

8. Laboratory of Manufacturing

The Laboratory of Manufacturing is used to make a product in the mechanical engineering. This laboratory is used by students and lecturers in learning process, students’s final project and research. The equipments in this laboratory is presented here.

A list of laboratories and their equipment can be seen in this document (download here).

B. Development of laboratory equipment

Some practicum and laboratory equipment that is not sufficient, it is planned to propose the equipment according to the needs analysis. A list of proposed equipment procurement is presented in this document (download here).

C. Budget allocation and financial resources

To support the implementation of activities, each study program is given a funding allocation. The distribution of funds is based on the proportionality of the number of students and the priority scale. The following is the allocation of funds for BEME study program in the last three years, download here.
